Paez: What strikers are told at Chiefs

As Gavin Hunt's side process their lack of goals this season, former striker Gustavo 'Gusheshe' Paez comments on Kaizer Chiefs' current scoring problem.

Since the 2020/21 DStv Premiership kicked off, Amakhosi strikers have found it hard to find the back of the net during a poor series of results for the club.

As things stand Chiefs have scored only one goal in the league, which was an own-goal from Chippa United. The two other goals in the MTN8 against Maritzburg United came from defender Yagan Sasman.

"Goals, always," Paez tells

"When they sign a new striker at Kaizer Chiefs what do they want? Goals. They tell you to score goals. Even if you don't play well but if you score a goal every game it's important for them.

"But sometimes you know you don't only play for you, you play for the team. So if you can help the team to score it's also good you know. When you are at Kaizer Chiefs the people want you to score the whole game, or at least give them something important."

The Venezuelan believes it is just a matter of time before the current strikers at Chiefs get it right in the absence of their main targetman Samir Nukovic, who is out with a long-term groin injury.

"Against Chippa they played a good game, they hit the goalposts a few times. But against Pirates I don't know what happened because they conceded three goals, I don't know whether they are frustrated or something. Maybe it's this problem that they can't sign players and all of that," Paez continues.

"But they have quality strikers, it's just that sometimes football is like that. If they score two goals, three goals in their next game nobody will remember the past. You know sometimes like when the team wins with one goal from a defender, like [Daniel] Cardoso when he scores a penalty, nobody talks about why the strikers don't score.

"So you will see one day they will score two, three goals and people will forget about their last four games. You know sometimes it's because when some teams play against Kaizer Chiefs the first thing they think is to defend.

"That's why it's not easy to score, because against all the clubs Kaizer Chiefs is always the favourite. Maybe it's that or the confidence. But they showed good confidence against Chippa."
