Highlands remain bottom of the standings with a single win in 11 games, with Igesund yet to win a league match since he took over seven weeks ago from Allan Freese.
It might be just a third of the season gone but being bottom is never comfortable and Igesund is naturally concerned about their safety.
“It is a tough battle we got,” he acknowledged after a 2-2 draw with Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
“There is no doubt about that and no one is trying to kid anybody here that it is going to be an easy walk in the park. I haven’t got a magic wand that says everybody is now going to be a great player now. Sometimes the players are what they are and like I have said I have got to strengthen the team in certain areas but this team has a long history and it is going to be a tough battle for us, there is no doubt about that.
“I mean that is the truth of the matter that it is going to be a tough battle but it is a great challenge for everybody and we will keep fighting and keep working. You cannot sit and start saying the team will or won’t relegated, it is a tough fight. At the moment there are a lot of teams down there fighting. There are a few teams down there and we are not concerned about them but focused on our own game and a result like this tonight it was very good for us. With a bit of luck we could have won this game. The way we have been playing outside that Sundowns game, I think we have done really well,” he said, referring to the 5-0 thumping by Mamelodi Sundowns on November 27.
Igesund also has his mind on successfully negotiating the period leading up to the January transfer window during which they will play Ajax Cape Town, Chippa United and Platinum Stars, before facing Cape Town City in February.
“What is important for us as a club is to try and get past this stage between now and the time when the window opens. Just like other teams we need to strengthen this team. In the next four games I would like to get six to seven points. I am going away to Cape Town for a little pre-season because I want to improve their anaerobic endurance, they have a lot of good endurance but anaerobic endurance is with the way I want to play, pressing and closing, I haven’t got that. When I come back from the pre-season we should be a better team.”
