Gert Schalkwyk: My All Time Favourite

In this edition of My All-Time Favourite former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder, Gert Schalkwyk reveals the name of the player he modelled his game on.

In his career that lasted about 13 years, Schalkwyk also turned out for clubs like Free State Stars, Wits University FC, Bloemfontein Celtic, Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows amongst others.

Schalkwyk says growing up watching Orlando Pirates legend Brendon 'Sgcebhezana' Silent instilled the love of football in him.

"It was Brendon Silent, we are mos from the same Kasie," Schalkwyk tells KickOff.

"We are both from Klerksdorp, So every time he was at home we would run after him,

"You know mos he played also very well,

"He was always telling us if we want to go far we need discipline and all those things.

"And then he would also help us during pre-season with training sessions and stuff, He definitely motivated us.

"He was quick, he could square the ball, he could run the whole line up and down,

"He was the guy that was not always on the news for the wrong reasons,

"One thing that he also told us was to work hard because you never know who is watching you play.

"He was the one that was always guiding me through everything you know, when I turned professional he was always telling me you must do this, you must do this you know.

"As someone who modelled his game to his, I think I managed to reach his level because Brendon was a winger and I was number 10, he would show me where to run if it's a square ball where to go in.

"So even till now, we are still talking, sharing ideas."
