Maluleka's exit to hurt Chiefs until 2021

Kaizer Chiefs could suffer the effects of key midfielder George Maluleka's departure to Mamelodi Sundowns until at least June 2021.

Chiefs confirmed on Wednesday that Maluleka will leave at the end of his current deal after signing a pre-contract with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 31-year-old had called a stop to negotiations over a new two-year deal with a one-year option from Amakhosi, citing that negotiations with Sundowns had already been finalised and signed.

The Naturena-based outfit also have the small matter of a transfer ban that means Maluleka cannot be replaced upon his departure, at least for the next two transfer windows until June 2021.

The club have lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport over their ban handed down by FIFA last month for the disputed transfer of Andriamirado Andrianarimanana from Malagasy side Fosa Juniors.

"The appeal is at [CAS] and receipt has been acknowledged and sent to respondents FIFA and Fosa Juniors, who have 20 days to respond," Chiefs communications officer Vina Maposa confirmed to

Should the appeal fail, The Glamour Boys will be forced to make do with their existing squad for the 2020/21 season, with midfield options such as Willard Katsande, Anthony Akumu, Kearyn Baccus, Philani Zulu and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

Siphelele Ntshangase, who appears not to be in coach Ernst Middendorp's plans, will also see his current contract come to an end in June.
