Bucs legends' record under threat

Orlando Pirates forward Gabadinho Mhango is on the verge of breaking a long-standing club record with his current goalscoring form.

Mhango could emulate the likes of club legends Lesley Manyathela and Dennis Lota should he continue finding the back of the net with such frequency as he has this season.

The Malawian frontman has scored 14 goals in the Absa Premiership this season and has already surpassed the club’s top league scorers of the past 10 seasons.

He is now within sight of a record set by the late Zambian great Lota, who netted 18 league goals some 20 years ago in 1999/00, and was equalled by the late Manyathela in 2002/03.

On both occasions, The Buccaneers saw their stars crowned Golden Boot winners for those respective seasons, and ‘Gaba’ could become the first player from the club to pick up the accolade since then.

The 27-year-old has scored 12 goals in his last 10 starts and now needs just five more goals from his side’s remaining 10 games to become Bucs’ outright top league scorer in the PSL era.

Having scored 15 goals in all competitions, including one in the Telkom Knockout, Mhango needs nine more goals to break the record for most goals (23) from a Pirates player across all competitions, which is still held by Lota.
