Former Orlando Pirates starlet Augustine Mahlonoko has announced that he is taking a break from football.
Mahlonoko, 20, was once heralded as one of the rising stars of South African football after becoming Orlando Pirates' youngest-ever player in 2018 at the age of 16 years and 352 days.
He struggled for game-time thereafter and parted ways with the Buccaneers in favour of a move to Baroka in 2020, before joining Pretoria Callies on loan ahead of the current campaign.
However, things have not gone to plan for player or club in Pretoria where it was recently revealed that the financially embattled Callies had released a number of players.
Mahlonoko was not named among those who will part ways with the GladAfrica Championship outfit but he confirmed on Monday that he will be taking an indefinite break from the game.
"I know a lot of people are going to be disappointed with the decision I took. Yes, I’m taking a break from football. My mental health is very important guys," he shared in a since-removed Facebook post.
"To every young player remember football is the most important of the least important things in life.
"There are things in life that are more important. Your happiness, mental health and peace are far more important. Please always remember that."
