Forgotten Downs star pleads for one last chance

Premiership

Former Mamelodi Sundowns player Wayne Arendse is pleading for one last chance to feature in the DStv Premiership at the age of 37.

Arendse feels he has passed the stage of his career where he is chasing after money and now just wants to share his experience and knowledge with younger players.

The CAF Champions League winner has been without a team since he parted ways with Sundowns in November 2020.

"I'm not hanging up my boots as yet, I still want to play, obviously because I still feel good," Arendse tells KickOff.

"Obviously I'm trying to speak to a few people but nothing concrete, because at the end of the day it's just to rub off my experience to the fellow players at whichever team approaches me.

"Hopefully, something comes up and we'll see because obviously there is nothing as yet."

Arednse insists money isn't an issue when trying to seek out a new contract at a top-flight club.

"You know the time for me for money it's long over. It's not about the money because for me I would say whichever team is interested, just put an offer on the table and let's go.

"Because to me at this stage it's just about playing, trying to help a club, help the players that are there, for me, it's just about playing and enjoying.

"It's not about money, the money I made with my entire career already.

"For me, I think it's just the age factor, it's the Achilles heel of South African football when players reach 33-years-old clubs starts backing away.

"But we had Nomvete, Vuyo Mere is also still going, Thiago Silva is still going at Chelsea at 37, and Ronaldo is still going at 37.

"It's the same thing with Shabba (Siphiwe Tshabalala), I think the last game that he played he got the man of the match and the guy is struggling to get a team just because he's 37."
