Davids steps in once again

Maritzburg face off with Chippa United at Harry Gwala Stadium as they get on with life minus the German, who has already had three stints with the club.

For Davids (35), it is yet another opportunity to raise his hand and show he can be trusted with being in charge of the dressing room for longer periods than being a ‘place holder’ used while awaiting the appointment of yet another coach.

Next to him on the bench will be younger brother Mahier, completing a rare family partnership of coaches in command.

Prior to the departure of Middendorp last week, Davids had a feel of being the boss when he took charge of the 3-2 defeat to Cape Town City last Tuesday as Middendorp served a suspension.

Last season Davids twice served in a similar capacity, firstly stepping up in September when Mandla Ncikazi failed to get off the blocks quick enough to hold on to his first head coaching job in the PSL.

Cilve Barker was then appointed as head coach, but the veteran coach couldn’t help alleviate situation and was gone within two months. Davids was given brief control of the team for just one game before Middendorp then returned for his third spell at the club.

With Middendorp now gone, Davids the go to man yet again.

Quintin Jettoo, the operations manager at Maritzburg has confirmed to KickOff.com that Davids will be charge of the game on Tuesday.

“Yes, Fadlu will be in charge on the bench on Tuesday, assisted by Mahier,” says Jettoo.

While CVs have been flooding the club offices, club boss Farook Kadodia has shown no intention to rush into appointing a new man who will be the fifth trainer that he has officially had in charge in the last 18 months after Steve Komphela, Ncikazi, Barker and Middendorp.
