Mulenga leads PSL assist charts

Former Orlando Pirates forward Augustine Mulenga has ripped up the DStv Premiership assists charts this season with his career rebirth driven under Benni McCarthy.

Mulenga arrived at Pirates from Zambian outfit Zanaco in 2018 with a fearsome reputation as a robust powerful striker and was a regular under the guidance of then-head coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojević.

After the Serbian's exit, he fell out of favour with the Buccaneers and eventually departed with a record of eight goals and 13 assists in 58 games.

The start of the 2020/21 campaign saw Mulenga 'unveiled' at Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila but a last-minute move from AmaZulu, after their takeover from the ambitious businessman Sandile Zungu, saw Mulenga snub a move to Limpopo.

And it's been nothing short of a career rebirth under Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy, who arrived in December last year and moved the Zambia international out to a wide left forward role.

With 10 assists and five goals in 22 games, he's been an integral part of Usuthu's shock title challenge to Mamelodi Sundowns this season which has also earned him a nomination for the Kick-Off Football of the Season award.

The likes of Thembinkosi Lorch, Khama Billiat, Paseka Mako, Lyle Lakay, Kermit Erasmus, Luvuyo Memela and Fagrie Lakay all narrowly missed out on the list with four assists each to their names this season.
