Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp is not taking Cape Town City’s current situation lightly and is confident they will finish in the top three come the end of the season.
Chiefs travel to the Mother City this weekend as they square off with The Citizens in their opening round Telkom Knockout fixture at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
While Amakhosi are a team on form as they sit top of the Absa Premiership table at present, Benni McCarthy has had a tough start to the campaign, finding themselves in mid-table 10th position.
But Middendorp has refused to look into the form of either side, discounting City’s struggles and insists they have enough quality to rise above their situation and end amongst the league champions and runners-up.
“I can understand fully being in the technical team responsibility of Cape Town City, I hear, of course, you can’t be satisfied [with the results],” said Middendorp.
“The team and squad are definitely a very good one; it’s definitely a squad that will be on the top-three or four side at the end of the season, no doubt – that, first of all, should be highlighted from our side.
“If you go into it and think, just because they are sitting on the middle of the log, it doesn’t mean anything. They have exceptionally good players, starting from the goalkeeping to the entire options of even position 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 [on the bench].
“And I think that’s the basics where we’re starting, knowing exactly that we had a good game in the second half, starting after 20-30 minutes in the PSL game that we won in Cape Town last time.
“So, no doubt we have to perform at a very good level over the 90 minutes in order to be successful.”
