Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has revealed his plan for one of the club’s newcomers, who is set to start against AmaZulu this weekend.
Chiefs will host bottom placed AmaZulu in a crunch Absa Premiership encounter, with the visitors having all to play for with just seven games remaining to retain their topflight status.
Despite the high stakes, it has already been confirmed that midfielder Anthony Akumu will earn his second start on Saturday, since arriving in the January transfer window.
The Kenyan has slowly been settling into the Amakhosi setup, managing a total of 372 minutes split across seven appearances thus far.
However, following the injury blow to captain Willard Katsande against Orlando Pirates last weekend, Middendorp has expressed confidence in the 27-year-old to deliver on what is expected of him.
“He’s definitely a candidate for this position to replace Willard, that is why he was brought here [to Chiefs],” said Middendorp.
“I would have loved to have a bit more time to give him this 30-45 minutes, a little bit under less stress unlike the final 20 minutes last weekend [in the Soweto Derby].
“But it’s not about wishes, sometimes you have to push a player in, and I hope he will process it and will be able to handle the expectation in this role on Saturday evening.”
