Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has given an indication of how he could set out in the coming games, beginning with this weekend’s tie against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Chiefs are set to make the short trip to Tshwane as they face the defending Absa Premiership champions at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The two sides recently met in a friendly, with Amakhosi walking away 4-2 victors, before they each went on to progress from this past weekend’s Telkom Knockout first round action.
For The Glamour Boys, the return of Samir Nurkovic came as a timely boost as he netted the all-important equaliser against Cape Town City, while Leonardo Castro’s hattrick has given Middendorp plenty to consider regarding his starting line-up this weekend.
But the German has since revealed he is not completely closed to fielding a front trio of Castro, Billiat and Nurkovic, however, under one key condition.
“I’ve said it before, Samir is an exceptional player, who was out for three weeks. He was not really able to, I think, use his heading ability,” said Middendorp.
“We trained the entire week [before Saturday’s game] and said, ‘Okay, when it came to set-pieces or whatever, stay away and go to the corner because we won’t use it – Saturday is early enough.’
“And, Ja, on the other side, Leonardo scored three goals in his fantastic 45 minutes last week Saturday against Sundowns, which makes it difficult at the moment.
“But why not possibly have Leonardo, Samir, Khama? We will see, as long as we understand and hold what I’m always saying – everybody is part of the team in terms of forward movement and defending, whether it is you’re doing just a step in closing passing lines. If we can agree about it, all three of them can play."
