Ernst: I don't have to wish Zinnbauer well

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has commented on the arrival of the new German on the block following Orlando Pirates’ appointment of Josef Zinnbauer last week.

Zinnbauer was announced as the new head coach at Pirates, taking over from assistant and interim coach Rhulani Mokwena last week, in what was a rather surprising move.

Coming from Germany himself, Middendorp, who historically bagged a hat-trick of Absa Premiership Coach of the Month awards on Tuesday, has given his take on the arrival of his 49-year-old compatriot.

However, the Chiefs mentor refused to delve into Zinnbauer’s credentials, placing emphasis on their age difference as a sign of their differing eras of coaching philosophies and so forth.

“I have to be very clear-structured – I know him by name, but you must understand that he is nearly 20 years younger, meaning that he came into another era when I had already left Germany years prior,” commented Middendorp.

“Of course, it’s not that you are not capable of understanding a certain person in this coaching [industry] but let’s give him a very clear chance and opportunity to manage the team adequately – that’s it.

“I don’t have any obligation to wish him all the best or any obligation to assess or make comments about [his job].”
