Maritzburg United coach Eric Tinkler expressed delight after they retained their Absa Premiership status and says the Team of Choice does not deserve to go down to the National First Division.
Maritzburg confirmed their place in the top flight for next season with a 2-0 victory over First Division side Royal Eagles at Chatsworth Stadium, their third straight victory in the promotion/relegation play-offs. It means both Eagles and Thskhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who are on three points in the mini-league, will not be able to catch Maritzburg, with one game still to play in the play-offs.
“I’m very proud of the boys. I think they responded exceptionally well since my arrival and they need to be given credit for that. They have worked very hard and that hard work paid off and I think this club truthfully does not deserve to go down,” Tinkler said on SuperSport TV after the match.
“This is a club that belongs in the PSL. It has a fantastic fan base and I think you saw that throughout the time I’ve been at the club. We’ve filled the stadiums, so they deserve it. They deserve for us to stay. And for the chairman, Mr [Farook] Kadodia], I think he deserves it for the hard work he puts in. His dedication to football is absolutely fantastic.”
Maritzburg will host TTM in front of their fans at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday in the final play-offs match.
