Unbeaten Arrows frustrate Bucs

Orlando Pirates dropped points for a second straight DStv Premiership clash following a goalless draw with Golden Arrows.

Ghanaian shot-stopper Richard Ofori made a return for Bucs, as Bongani Sam started for the first time this season alongside Happy Jele in defence.

Sam managed to get on the ball immediately in the opening seconds of the match and set up a chance from the left-side for Vincent Pule, who skewed off target from the centre of the area.

Pirates still enjoyed the lion share of possession thereafter, but struggled to open up Abafana Besthende who sat on the edge of their defensive area and deployed a counter-attacking approach.

The Buccaneers stretched this defensive block with balls out wide to Sam in particular and it nearly paid off 35 minutes in when Thembinkosi Lorch headed against the post from close-range.

Abafana Besthende were first to throw on a substitution early in the second half, as Siboniso Conco made way for Lindokuhle Mtshali.

Pirates were opened up from the right minutes after resumption after a one-two involving Pule Mmodi released Mthokozisi Dube in a promising area, but the fullback failed to take aim.

Josef Zinnbauer’s side began to take control towards the closing period of the second half, as a free-kick from outside the area by Gabadinho Mhango shaved the top of goal.

Abafana Besthende managed to contain the threats from the Buccaneers as the match headed to full-time with a dipping shot from Mmodi hitting the top of the net.

while there were chances albeit half-hearted from the respective sides in the closing seconds, neither side profited as Pirates failed to find the back of the net for a second straight game.
