Chiefs clinch Soweto derby bragging rights

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs registered a 3-1 victory over Swallows to jump up to second spot on the DStv Premiership log on Sunday afternoon.

With Khama Billiat back in the line-up after missing Wednesday’s match against AmaZulu, the Amakhosi also granted Kearyn Baccus and Happy Mashiane their first starts of the campaign.

After soaking up the earlier pressure, the Amakhosi came close to the breakthrough 12 minutes gone from a half-volley at the near post by Bernard Parker but Jody February saved.

The Dube Birds shifted advantage inside a minute and carved out an opportunity of their own through Kamohelo Mahlatsi’s looping attempt from the far post off a move from the left-side.

It was Chiefs though who broke the deadlock three minutes to halftime after Keagan Dolly pounced on a pass into space from Billiat to finish from close-range from misplaced possession.

The Amakhosi made it two within seconds when Billiat latched onto a square pass from the right-side by Ramahlwe Mphahlele to fire into the roof of the net.

Billiat extended the lead when he pierced through a number of challenges eight minutes into the second half after cutting in from the left-channel to beat February from point-blank range.

Swallows came close to pull a goal back from a close-range attempt by Lebohang Mokoena off a pacey attack, but it was parried by goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

With Keletso Makgalwa and Ruzaigh Gamildien on the field, Swallows did got a goal back when Mokoena attacked Grant Margeman’s ball midway in the second period to fire in off the post.

Swallows continued to trouble the Amakhosi with shots from all angles in pursuit of a comeback, but it wasn’t to be as the visitors snatched victory.
