10-man Swallows humble City

Swallows FC maintained their unbeaten record and moved level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the DStv Premiership table with a 3-2 victory over Cape Town City on Tuesday.

Ruzaigh Gamildien released Zaphaniah Mbokoma down the left flank and the winger crossed into the box, with his effort deflecting off Cape Town City defender Giannis Potouridis and almost wrong-footing his goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, who did well to recover and prevent the ball from rolling over the line on 18 minutes.

In the 25th minute, Given Thibedi played the one-two with Thabo Matlaba to work his way into a promising position but his shot sailed over the bar.

Swallows won a penalty in the 38th minute after Taariq Fielies brought down Gamildien just inside the box with the striker having caught the defender unawares with a run off the shoulder. Gamildien dusted himself off and coolly sent Leeuwenburgh the wrong way for his sixth goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Gamildien was played in behind the City defence courtesy of a superb through-ball from Matlaba, but he failed to grab his double as he shot into the legs of the onrushing Leeuwenburgh with the ball going out to safety after a bit of ping-pong.

But just a minute after that, the Cape Town-born striker made amends for that miss with his second and seventh of the season. Kgaogela Sekgota was released down the left and put the cross on a platter for Gamildien to complete a simple finish for 2-0.

Four minutes after the interval, Matlaba got to the byline on the right-hand side with some decent dribbling and floated the ball to the back post where it came to Thibedi, but his shot from an acute angle sailed wide.

In the 53rd minute, City found a way back into the game when Potouridis' attempted cross into the box was blocked by the hand of Matlaba with the referee pointing to the spot. Mduduzi Mdantsane stepped up and calmly sent Virgil Vries the wrong way from 12 yards.

The hosts could easily have been level in the 68th minute. Abubaker Mobara swung the free-kick in to an unmarked Mdantsane in the box, but the midfielder's header went well wide when he should have at least hit the target.

Swallows were dealt a blow when they went down to ten men after Mbokoma was sent off for a second yellow card in the 72nd minute. However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Junaid Sait headed home from a Lebohang Mokoena corner for a 3-1 lead four minutes later.

Morris lost his cool in the closing stages and got himself sent off for a second yellow. Mdantsane then grabbed his brace for his eighth of the season with a powerful header after an inch-perfect cross from Mobara but it was not enough in the end for the Citizens.
