SuperSport edge spirited Citizens

Premiership

SuperSport United cut Mamelodi Sundowns' lead at the top of the DStv Premiership to just two points with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cape Town City on Saturday.

In the fifth minute, Kudakwashe Mahachi played a great ball to Ghampani Lungu at the back post but his headed effort went wide.

SuperSport have just shaded it in terms of dominance in the opening stages and took the lead in the 23rd minute when Lungu fired into the bottom left corner after being set up brilliantly by Evans Rusike.

In the 33rd minute, Sipho Mbule's free kick was drilled in but it was straight at Peter Leeuwenburgh who saved comfortably.

With five minutes to go before the interval, City's top-scorer this season Mduduzi Mdantsane attempted to curl one in the top corner but his effort went narrowly over the bar.

City made the perfect start to the second half when Surprise Ralani fired a shot from outside the box to level matters in the 47th minute.

It was nearly a second for Ralani shortly afterwards but Williams made a good diving save to his right with the ball looking destined for the top right-hand corner.

With 53 minutes gone on the clock, Bradley Grobler played in Rusike, who cut back in the box and got a shot away but it was wide.

Mdantsane then fired over from range for City before Webber cracked it from range for Matsatsantsa and Leeuwenburgh spilled it but the Citizens managed to clear the danger.

Ralani, who was having an excellent game, then turned provider when he set Thabo Nodada into a bit of space but the midfielder got a bit too much power on his effort as it went over the bar.

Kaitano Tembo brought on Thamsanqa Gabuza as SuperSport went for a more direct approach. And it paid dividends when a long ball was flicked on by Grobler for his strike partner Gabuza to head over Leeuwenburgh, who had come off his line but didn't get to the ball in time.

Despite some heavy City pressure, the Pretoria-based side would hold on for a precious victory.
