SuperSport United defeated Baroka FC 2-0 to move one point behind DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday evening.
Former Bafana Bafana international Buhle Mkhwanazi was named on the bench by United, as the visiting team relied on star forward Evidence Makgopa at the top end of the pitch.
It was the Tshwane outfit that looked to register first minutes from the start through a ball in behind by Jamie Webber, but Thamsanqa Gabuza directed the supply well wide.
Baroka provided a clear chance too after 10 minutes when a move created by Bennet Bobete got in Thamsanqa Masiya who then feed Kgodiso Monama to profit but to no avail.
Makgopa was at the end of another move for the visitors from a loose ball to go level with national teammate Ronwen Williams, who went on to make a sublime close-range save.
SuperSport’s overall approach moments towards the break were scuppered with Siyabonga Nhlapo stretchered off and Keenan Phillips introduced.
More movement on the bench of United took place ahead of the start of the second half, as Webber vacated duty for Ghampani Lungu.
The latter made his presence felt moments in the match after Lungu applied a composed finish to give Matsatsantsa the lead with the visitors caught out.
A brace followed from the Zambian a few minutes later as he showed another piece of composure to lob Oscarine Masuluke for his and the team’s second strike.
Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele pushed the host tirelessly in the closing periods in desperate pursuit of a comeback, but United who had youngster Selaelo Rasebotja for his debut held tight for the win.
