Stellies off to winning start in 2021

Premiership

Stellenbosch FC started the new year with a 2-0 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday.

The first chance came for the men in maroon with Deano van Rooyen cutting the ball across the face of goal but nobody was on the end of it as the chance went begging.

TTM right-back Nicholas Lukhubeni then produced a fantastic stinging long-range on his weaker left foot, with Stellies goalkeeper Lee-Raoul Langeveldt did brilliantly to tip over the bar.

Stellies right-wing Stanley Dimgba then fired a hopeful effort at goal after finding space out wide but the Nigerian's shot was wide of the post. Lukhubeni then tried his luck from 35 metres out and Langeveld was up to the test.

Soon after, TTM midfielder Edgar Manaka left the crossbar rattling but the visitors didn't rue that miss for too long as they won a penalty in the 16th minute for a Marvin de Goede handball. However, in another twist, Thabo Rakhale's spot-kick was saved by Stellies skipper Langeveldt.

The giving away of a penalty sparked Stellies into life and Ashley du Preez turned his defender with a moment of individual brilliance but failed to hit the target with his shot hitting the side netting.

Five minutes before the interval, Van Rooyen skipped past a couple of defenders and cut the ball back for Du Preez at the end of it but the number nine couldn't find the back of the net.

On the stroke of half-time, Van Rooyen was fouled on the edge of the box and Stellies left-back Marc Van Heerden let fly, with the keeper tipping it over the bar for a corner kick.

Dimgba was proving to be quite the creator for Steve Barker's side and his cut back found Waseem Adams, but the Stellies starlet leant back on his effort as it ballooned over.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 65th when both Stellies wing-backs combined with Van Heerden on the finishing end of a sweeping counter-attacking move.

Phathutshedzo NangeNange found the back of the net in the 81st minute, dinking it over the goal keeper delightfully after Ali Msengi fed him in on goal to give Barker's side a two-goal cushion.
