Stellies hold top-eight hopefuls Galaxy

Premiership

Stellenbosch FC and TS Galaxy settled for a share of the spoils in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Rising star Antonio Van Wyk was named on the bench by Stellies on the back of his exploits in the DStv Dsiki Challenge Rewired, as Galaxy were without Sunday’s match winner Masilake Phohlongo.

Stellenbosch looked to pose the first threat from a free-kick by full-back Marc Van Heerden before the half-hour mark after the away side committed a foul, but he went over.

A loose pass from the Rockets moments before the end of the first half allocated Junior Mendieta, who went and had a crack but goalkeeper Wensten Van der Linde was up to task.

Stellenbosch made a big start to the second half with the same momentum from the first half and a substitution too in Fuad Johnson in for Ashley Du Preez.

Stellies missed a big chance in the last 20 minutes as a ball from Jayden Adams spotted Sandile Mthethwa who headed wide from a promising position.

More chances fell the way of the host five minutes before time when a half-volley from Johnson off a smart supply brought a save off Van der Linde.

The match ended goalless in the end, as neither side managed to find the breakthrough as Galaxy remained in eighth spot to Stellies’s third-bottom standing.
