Lakay rescues Downs' unbeaten record

Premiership

DStv Premiership leaders Mamelod Sundowns battled back to secure a 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday evening.

Masandawana preferred Kennedy Mweene, Rivaldo Coetzee and Thabiso Kutumela from their win over Sekhukhune United, with Stellies debuting Athenkosi Mcaba and Solomon Letsoenyo.

Sundowns looked to register first minutes in from a square delivery to the back-post, but Haashim Domingo misjudged the flight of the ball and thus the opportunity went off target.

The host experienced more forward ventures inside the closing quarter and saw Junior Mendieta’s rasping strike from outside the area shaved the top of the crossbar with Mweene in two minds.

Although, Masandawana quickly recovered momentum with over ten minutes to the break and had Kutumela’s low first-time attempt from a tight angle put goalkeeper Sage Stephens to work.

Stellies retrieved advantage five minutes to halftime and won a penalty after Khuliso Mudau upended Ashley Du Preez in the area, leaving Mendieta to fire in from 12-yards out.

That proved to be Mudau's final involvement, as the Brazilians started the second period by withdrawing the full-back for Thapelo Morena introduced.

Sundowns came close to go level from a ball in at the near post following a free-kick minutes in the restart, but Kutumela’s header glanced beyond the supposed target.

It took the Brazilians only 12 minutes from the restart to draw level when Lyle Lakay brought a low pass outside the area under control to find the bottom-corner through a left-footed strike.

Masandawana, who now had the pendulum on their side, went in search for the winner late on and nearly found it through Lakay’s smart attempt from a difficult angle but Stephens saved.

The Brazilians maintained pressure heading to fulltime though the winner proved elusive amidst Kermit Erasmus going over with a free-kick from a tight angle, as it finished all square.
