Stellenbosch FC jumped to sixth place in the DStv Premiership with a 2-0 win over Chippa United on Saturday afternoon.
Stellies handed first starts to Phathutshedzo Nange and Junior Mendieta. As for Chippa, Ryan Rae, Isaac Nhlapho and Avela Cezu were given their first starts of the season.
Mendieta was in the thick of things just after kick-off with a telling ball unleashing Ashley Du Preez in a promising area, but the nimble footed forward failed to capitalise.
Stellenbosch didn’t stop pushing in the earlier exchanges as Dean David Van Rooyen dragged a decent chance in an equally good area wide of the intended target.
Chippa would finally see their resistance dismantled on 21 minutes when Mendieta connected with a ball from Marc Van Heerden to head past Mothwa.
The Chilli Boys were close to drawing level after the half-hour mark with a free-kick from Bienvenu Eva Nga, but Lee Langeveldt gathered comfortably in the end.
An early corner from Stellies just after halftime found a lurking Nathan Sinkala, whose overhead kick went over, while Chippa introduced Tumiso Mogakwe for Cezu and Tsietsi Khooa for Rae.
Chippa begin to find openings towards the midway stage in the second half though for all their forays, Langeveldt stayed alert and parried every threat.
The hosts made sure of the full complement of points in the remaining four minutes following an evenly balanced quarter as Sinkala picked up Nange’s ball to bend beyond Mothwa.
Chippa pushed for a comeback in the closing stages, but Stellenbosch survived the late onslaught to bag their first win of the season.
