City battle back to sink Royal AM

Cape Town City picked up their first win of the campaign in the DStv Premiership with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Royal AM on Wednesday.

New signing Douglas Maphumo started up front and Craig Martin came in for Khanyisa Mayo as City targeted their first league win of the season against a tough Royal AM outfit.

It was the host that made the early breakthrough courtesy of a free-kick by Ndumiso Mabena following a foul by the Citizens, who had missed a clear chance moments prior through Martin.

The Citizens began to probe a turnaround in the middle of the first spell through a shot outside the area by Abdul Ajagun, but goalkeeper Hugo Nyame made a solid save.

Royal AM began to breathe heavily as the Citizens pressed an equaliser from balls in the six-yard area by in particular Terrence Mashego, but the danger was gathered.

With the second half underway, City equalised seven minutes from resumption through a smart finish from Mduduzi Mdantsane following clever play by Thamsanqa Mkhize.

The home side trailed in the space of five minutes as centre-back Taariq Fielies leaped highest to head beyond the goalkeeper of Royal AM Nyame.

AM refused to sit back after losing dominance midway in the second half and closed in on the leveller with a free-kick by Mabena, but he found the post with Hugo Marques parrying the rebound.

Three substitutions from Eric Tinkler followed in the last 12 minutes, as Mayo, new signing Idumba Fasika and Mpho Makola entered fray for the travelling side.

These introductions helped the Citizens to control the latter stages and picked up their first win of the season.
