Bucs sink SuperSport with late winner

Premiership

Orlando Pirates came back from a goal down to bag a 2-1 win over SuperSport United in the DStv Premiership on Saturday evening.

Pirates made no changes from the thumping MTN8 semi-final victory over Kaizer Chiefs, but SuperSport gave Luke Fleurs his first start of the season with Clayton Daniels unavailable.

The Buccaneers were behind in the first five minutes when Teboho Mokoena brought down a looping ball in the centre of the area to toe-poke past Richard Ofori amidst calls for an offside.

Vincent Pule, who scored a cracker in this fixture last season, missed a sitter on the edge of the area midway in the first half following a loose ball from the right-side.

The Sea Robbers continued probing for the equaliser as the first half flew by, but Pule in particular struggled to bring SuperSport goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to work.

Pirates issued a double substitution following halftime with Nkanyiso Zungu introduced for Thabang Monare and Deon Hotto making way for Terrence Dzvukamanja.

Matsatsantsa succumbed to early pressure in the second stanza when Siyabonga Nhlapo conceded a penalty after upending Zakhele Lepasa, who stepped up to convert from 12-yards to level matters.

The match became tightly contested across all departments with the margin to victory lying on a narrow scale as Lepasa headed Zungu’s cross wide of the near corner.

Bradley Grobler nearly stole all the points late on after attempting a first-time volley from the far side from a ball on the right by Ghampani Lungu, but Ofori narrowed the angle.

Pirates made the visitors pay for their inaccuracy on 86 minutes when Tshegofatso Mabasa made the most of poor communication between Fleurs and Ronwen Williams to slot into an empty net.

Grobler looked to bring his side level in stoppage time with a header from a corner, but it went wide as the Buccaneers bagged victory to go top.
