10-man Bucs drop points at home

Ten-man Orlando Pirates were held to a 2-2 draw by Stellenbosch FC in their DStv Premiership opener at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Happy Jele, Gabadinho Mhango and debutants Goodman Mosele and Bandile Shandu came into the Pirates side, with Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids in the dugout after Josef Zinnbauer's departure.

Stellies stunned the Buccaneers by taking the lead in the third minute. Waseem Isaacs capped his return to the Winelands outfit profiting from a fast counter-attack and the assist by Junior Mendieta.

Pirates equalised in the 18th minute. They won a free-kick in a promising position on the edge of the box. Deon Hotto stepped up and his powerful effort deflected off the wall and into the top corner.

A few minutes later, Kabelo Dlamini was played in by Gabadinho Mhango, before being denied by a good save from Langeveldt as the hosts began to increase the pressure.

Pirates were reduced to ten men when Ntsikelelo Nyauza was sent off for an apparent elbow on Ashley du Preez on the left-hand byline, as the half ended with a bit of drama.

Nevertheless, the home side took the lead four minutes after half-time. Hotto delivered the corner and Vincent Pule flicked the ball on to the far post for Mosele to score on debut.

Stellies' new signing Judas Moseamedi was brought on in the 51st minute and grabbed the equaliser in the 55th minute. Du Preez played a lovely ball to the near post, where Moseamedi got in front of Thulani Hlatshwayo and beat Ofori with the diving header.

Sandile Mthethwa was brought on to shore things up defensively for his debut after his move from Chippa United as he came on for Shandu, suggesting Pirates were happy to settle for a point down to ten men.

And in the end, Moseamedi would come up trumps against the Soweto giants once again and deal a hammer blow to the side he supported growing up to ensure Steve Barker's men came away with a point.
