Pirates held by Marumo Gallants

Premiership

Orlando Pirates dropped points for a second DStv Premiership match in a row after being held by Marumo Gallants at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

Vincent Pule and Nkanyiso Zungu came into the Pirates side for Tebogo Tlolane and the suspended Ntsikelelo Nyauza. For Gallants, Sede Junior Dion and Mpho Mvelase were introduced in place of Maboke Matlakala and Thato Khiba.

In the second minute, Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi had to be alert and quickly rush off his line to clear the danger after Deon Hotto had played the long ball over the top for Gabadinho Mhango.

Soon after, Mhango was found with a pinpoint long ball from Goodman Mosele, but the Malawian's angled shot from out wide on the left was dealt with by Arubi.

Babina Noko then showed their first real threat in the 24th minute. Sicelokuhle Hlatshwayo assisted with cross and Junior Dion headed just inches wide as Pirates breathed a sigh of relief.

There was only one shot on target in the opening half as the sides went into the interval, but Pirates would have been the less happier of the two sides after dominating for most of the first half.

Pirates looked to break through on their right soon after the interval. Terrence Dzvukamanja set up Zungu to arrive and strike it at goal but he dragged his effort wide of the near post in wasteful fashion.

In the 65th minute, a corner was delivered by Marumo Gallants into the box and it was flicked onto Celimpilo Ngema at the back post, who struck it nicely but it bounced away off the corner of bar and upright.

Pirates began to show more ambition in the final quarter of an hour as Dzvukamanja laid the ball off to Hotto on the edge of the box and the Namibian struck the ball powerfully first-time on his left foot but it was unfortunately straight at Arubi when either side would have posed the Zimbabwean shot-stopper a problem.

And in the end, the sides could not be separated as Gallants, like Pirates, have now also played to back-to-back DStv Premiership draws after two rounds.
