Chiefs' struggles continue at Gallants

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs were unable to get back on the winning trail after playing to a goalless draw against winless Marumo Gallants.

Chiefs made four changes from the loss to Royal AM, with goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, Reeve Frosler, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Lebogang Manyama all coming into the side.

The Soweto giants looked to settle first following the opening exchanges, but Gallants nearly made the breakthrough through Katlego Otladisa’s point-blank header though Akpeyi parried.

Gallants launched another scare on the half-hour mark when Celimpilo Ngema’s powerful shot from the right-wide proved tough for Akpeyi, who got bailed by a defensive clearance.

The Amakhosi’s first shot in anger came seven minutes to halftime after Cole Alexander picked up a loose ball from a corner-kick to lash over the top from outside the area.

Gallants began to drop deep and invited the Amakhosi to their first major threat ten minutes in the second half from a free-kick by Khama Billiat, but goalkeeper Washington Arubi collected.

It got worse for the Amakhosi halfway in the match when Sifiso Hlanti earned a second yellow and subsequent red card for a rash challenge on Otladisa which led to a free-kick.

From the free-kick, Gallants were denied the lead as Akpeyi produced a stunning point-blank save to parry a glancing header from Thabo Mnyamane.

The playing personnel all-round evened up with ten minutes to go after Ngema saw a straight red for a coming-together with Billiat.

Chiefs worked Arubi again late on from a header by Eric Mathoho off Parker’s free-kick before Daniel Cardoso nodded wide from a gaping goal, as it finished goalless.
