Maritzburg add to Galaxy's woes

Maritzburg United added to TS Galaxy's woes in the DStv Premiership with a 1-0 triumph at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Rowan Human, Lungelo Bhengu and Daylon Claasen were brought into the Martitzburg line-up, as Galaxy started Sihle Ndluli and Bathusi Aubaas after the loss to AmaZulu.

Maritzburg hoped to follow up their impressive result against Pirates with a fine start early on as Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s header shaved the crossbar from Zukile Kewuti’s ball in.

Kewuti was then on the end of a chance to make the breakthrough from a free-kick shortly before the middle stage of the first half, but he was smothered by Vasilije Kolak.

The Team of Choice continued to see the lion share of chances through a snap-shot in the area by Alfred Ndengane ten minutes after the half-hour mark following a scramble.

Galaxy looked for the lead going to halftime as an opening down the right-side presented itself to Tshegofatso Nyama, who failed to hit the target from a tight angle.

Changes from the two benches saw Galaxy throw on Ethan Brooks and Wayde Lekay while Maritzburg brought on Lifa Hlongwane in the place of Human.

It worked out for the Team of Choice seconds after the restart as Aubaas helped a ball in the heart of the six-yard area past his own goalkeeper Kolak.

The Rockets came alive a little before the middle of the second period as a strike from range by Lekay worked goalkeeper Marcel Engelhardt to a solid save.

Maritzburg regained ground soon thereafter and a low free-kick outside the area from Lifa Hlongwane forced Kolak to palm around the post.

Galaxy handed new signing Carlos Filipetto his debut, as he became the first Paraguayan player to play in the top flight of South African football after Kolak denied Bongokuhle Hlongwane a goal.

The Team of Choice controlled the balance of play following the closing exchanges to see out the victory and a spot in the top eight leaving Galaxy winless.
