Chiefs snatch victory at Maritzburg

Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs claimed their fourth win in five DStv Premiership matches with a narrow 1- 0 victory over Maritzburg United on Sunday evening.

The Amakhosi handed veteran full-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele his first start of the season along with a re-call for Reeve Frosler, while Leonardo Castro was named on the bench.

In the aftermath of a lengthy delay, the match finally got underway 90 minutes after the initial kick-off and it saw the Team of Choice running at the Amakhosi with Lifa Hlongwane cutting in from the left to have a go.

Chiefs kept their nerve despite the pressure the host unleashed and were able to put a number of balls and bodies in the final third though it wasn’t matched by the end product.

The clearer chances though found Maritzburg as Richard Zumah positioned perfectly to attack a long pass for a crack, while Bongokuhle Hlongwane dragged a cutback outside the area over target.

Chiefs looked for a different spell following the second period and brought defender Eric Mathoho in with a half-volley from a cleverly taken delivery.

Further openings followed for the Amakhosi, none more than a free-kick on the near side of the area by Khama Billiat that sailed over the crossbar.

The Amakhosi made their dominant spell count midway in the second half when Bernard Parker found space in the centre of the area to head home a cross from Billiat.

Maritzburg targeted a response and to that put on a double change in Leletu Skelem as well as Rowan Human.

However, the changes didn’t steer the Team of Choice to their desired wish, as Chiefs held on for the victory on the road.
