Swallows snatch a draw at Downs

Premiership

Swallows FC struck in the dying seconds of the second half to secure a 1-1 draw away to DStv Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday afternoon.

Peter Shalulile and Brian Onyango’ absence handed a recall for Gaston Sirino and Hlompho Kekana in Masandawana’s two changes from the goalless draw against Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Brazilians should’ve taken the lead when a ball from the right-side on 15 minutes by Sirino found Lebohang Maboe, who tapped wide of the bottom-corner.

Kekana was next to attempt the breakthrough for the host after landing onto a cross-field ball on the near-side of the area, but he also failed to test their opposite number Virgil Vries.

Swallows slowly began to hold their own, however they were behind when Kermit Erasmus ran on the shoulder of the area following a through pass on 44 minutes to pick out the top-corner.

Masandawana started the second half pinned their own half as the Dube Birds gunned towards an equaliser, but Njabulo Ngcobo failed to profit from a corner-kick.

Ngcobo came close again after 60 minutes following a short-corner from captain Lebohang Mokoena, but his towering header in the centre of the area sailed over the top.

This prompted Masandawana to refresh their stall inside five minutes, as Sibusiso Vilakazi replaced Kekana and Sirino sacrificed for Sphelele Mkhulise.

Vilakazi wasted no time to get involved after getting on the end of a back-heel on the far side of the area from Zwane to fire on target, but Vries went down to smother the midfielder's effort.

Swallows soon regrouped and snatched a point at the death when Musa Nyatama pounced on a spill from goalkeeper Denis Onyango to head home, leaving the two sides level on points at the top.
