Citizens back on the winning trail

Cape Town City broke an eight-match winless streak with a 3-0 victory over SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In the third minute, Jamie Webber played in Iqraam Rayners from a set piece. It was switched to Guily Manziba who lost the ball and the chance went begging.

On the hour mark, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe fouled Amethyst Ralani and he curled in the set-piece with Fagrie Lakay's volley going high of the bar.

Soon after, the Citizens won a penalty. Ditlhokwe brought down Tashreeq Morris in the area and Fagrie Lakay slotted the spot-kick into the bottom right-hand corner for his sixth goal of the season.

Soon after, Webber laid it up for Teboho Mokoena, who shot from outside the box and there was a wicked deflection with the ball almost creeping in the corner.

It was a very cagey came with opportunities few and far between. City came close in the 58th minute when Lakay cut the ball back for Morris and his shot was a fierce one but SuperSport shot-stopper Ronwen Williams got well behind it.

The game was finally opening up. Mokoena's corner was headed towards goal by Grant Kekana, but his effort was cleared off the goalline.

City doubled their lead in the 64th minute. Makola played the one-two with Thabo Nodada in the box and his effort went into the roof of the net.

SuperSport were throwing more men forward as they tried to force their way back into the contest but it was leaving them exposed at the back. City broke on the counter and City had a two-on-one with Lakay squaring the ball for Morris, whose effort was straight down the middle and palmed away to safety by Williams.

Matsatsantsa won a free-kick in a promising position on the edge of the box when Abubaker Mobara felled Mokoena. Moses Waiswa's was well-struck but Leeuwenburg got right behind it.

City put the game to bed with five minutes to go. The corner from found its way to the back post for a completely unmarked Thamsanqa Mkhize to cut the ball back for man-of-the-match Morris to have a simple tap-in to an empty net for his second goal of the encounter.
