Citizens survive scare in thrilling win

Premiership

Cape Town City registered their first home win of the season in the DStv Premiership defeating Golden Arrows 4-3 on Saturday evening.

City welcomed back Nathan Fasika in defence and also re-called in Edmilson Dove and Craig Martin from their loss to Sekhukhune United, while Arrows handed starting berths to Siyavuya Ndlovu and Lungelo Dube.

Fagrie Lakay should’ve put City in front from a loose ball in the area after only two minutes played but from the tightest of angles, the attacker fluffed his lines.

The Citizens eventually grabbed the lead in the middle of the first half through Lakay, who drilled a first-time shot from Martin’s back-heel into the top corner.

It was two for the host two minutes later when Thamsanqa Mkhize beat Maximilian Mbaeva to Thabo Nodada’s ball into channel before going on to slot into an empty net.

City made it three in the last six minutes before halftime as Mduduzi Mdantsane caught Mbaeva unaware to retrieve possession for a cool finish into an empty net.

With Siphamandla Sabelo and Michael Gumede on for Arrows, the host missed out on a fourth goal when Mdantsane had his low snap shot in the area cleared off the goal-line.

However, It took just 12 minutes for City to claim a fourth goal in the second half after Lakay showed the Arrows defence a clean pair of heels to square a pass for Martin to rifle in the roof of the net.

Abafana Besthende reduced the home side’s advantage inside 61 minutes as Pule Mmodi got on the end of a ball from the left-side to smash into the near corner.

Arrows bagged a second late on after Nkosinathi Sibisi beat Hugo Marques from the penalty-spot following a foul in the area on Gumede.

The nerves began to grow for City in the last three minutes as Nqubeko Dlamini reacted quick to a high ball in the area to slot into the bottom-corner to make it a one-goal deficit with four minutes left on the clock.

However, the Citizens did enough to thwart Arrows in the latter stages of the stanza to claim a first win in the Mother City this season in the league.
