Baroka halt Stellies' winning run

Premiership

Stellenbosch FC remain unbeaten in the DStv Premiership this season following a 1-1 draw at Baroka FC on Saturday evening.

Thamsanqa Masiya earned a start for Baroka on the back of a suspension, with Oscarine Masuluke back in goal. As for Stelllies, Judas Moseamedi started on the bench with Ashley Du Preez installed.

Stellenbosch, who have scored goals aplenty lately, made the breakthrough eight minutes in after Du Preez pounced on a rebound from Masuluke who had spilled a shot from Stanley Dimgba.

Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele didn’t lose hope following the set-back and got back on level terms through a well-taken strike from Bennet Bobete.

The goal brought a new optimism to Baroka, who didn’t stop to cause their opponents all sorts of issues with balls from Decide Chauke, Evidence Makgopa and their goal-scorer Bobete.

With the rain piling down, Stellenbosch tried to reclaim the lead following the start of the second half as Baroka introduced Richard Mbulu for Tshepo Mokhabi.

Stellies began to settle a little over the midway stage of the second half and had defender Rafiq De Goede’s header towards target cleared by the opposite defence.

Bakgaga missed a big chance to take the lead in the last ten minutes courtesy of Joslin Kamatuka from a ball at the back-post, but the Namibian couldn’t capitalise.

The host saw more opportunities slip by with Mbulu in particular unable to make use, thus saw the contest end honours even.
