SuperSport climb to second spot

Premiership

SuperSport United rose to second spot on the DStv Premiership standings after playing to a goalless draw against AmaZulu, who remain winless.

Usuthu retained Kgotso Moleko and Thabo Qalinge from the loss to Nyasa Big Bullets, but United named one change from their win over Golden Arrows in Kudakwashe Mahachi for Sipho Mbule, who missed out through injury.

It was Qalinge that came closest to bag the opener three minutes gone with a header inside the area, but the nimble footed was unable to get one over his former outfit.

SuperSport battled to contain Qalinge, whose rasping shot from a smart area off a lay-off by Siphelele Mthembu five minutes before the half-hour mark brought goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to a save.

Matsatsanta began to let loose inside 35 minutes and troubled their host when Iqraam Rayners held off a challenge to latch onto Onismor Bhasera’s pass and force Usuthu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa to a save.

The second half followed with a substitution from United, as Mahachi made way for lanky striker Thamsanqa Gabuza just minutes before Bradley Grobler drilled a shot outside the area wide.

AmaZulu struggled to gather rhythm and presented Grobler another opportunity with a header from a corner-kick 12 minutes from the break, but Mothwa saved.

Matsatsantsa pushed and pushed in the middle of the second stanza and worked yet another chance from a half-volley by Teboho Mokoena after a punch by Mothwa, but it went over.

Benni McCarthy’s men played the last 25 minutes with ten players after Tercious Malepe picked up a red card for a dangerous challenge on SuperSport midfielder Jamie Webber.

As the latter stages dawned, Usuthu and Matsatsantsa’s frustrations continued whilst United had Luke Fleurs dismissed for a second bookable offence as the match ended goalless.
