In-form AmaZulu extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in the DStv Premiership after edging SuperSport United 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
SuperSport made two changes from their draw against Orlando Pirates, as Teboho Mokoena and Guily Manziba were recalled while Usuthu made wholesale changes, retaining only Thembela Sikhakhane and Makhehlene Makhaula.
The hosts were applying the pressure in the early stages and they were rewarded in the 24th minute after Augustine Mulenga pounced on a terrible back pass, dribbled his way on the left wing and played a cut-back to Siphelele Mthembu for the close-range finish.
Manziba came close to equalising for Matsatsantsa six minutes later with a looping strike at the near post that was parried over the bar by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.
Kaitano Tembo's charges were working their way back into the game in the closing phase of the first stanza but they were struggling to combine in the last third and they went to the break trailing by an odd goal.
SuperSport lacked the sense of urgency coming from the break, finding it difficult to build momentum, with Usuthu comfortable defensively, looking for chances on counter-attacks.
Mthembu should have doubled the lead for Benni McCarthy's troops in the last quarter of an hour after receiving a cut-back from close range but he scuffed his shot wide.
Talent Chawapiwa also had a wonderful chance to wrap up the game for AmaZulu in the last two minutes after going clear on goal but he guided his volley wide and over the bar, with shot-stopper Ronwen Williams out of his goal but Usuthu held on to cement their sixth spot on the log.
