AmaZulu leaped into seventh spot after coming from behind to beat Stellenbosch 2-1 in the DStv Premiership on Friday evening.
Thembela Sikhakhane was Usuthu's only change from the win over Baroka FC, with Granwald Scott and Jayden Adams Stellenbosch’s two switches from the goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs.
Stellies forced the first chance of the game on five minutes with a shot from the area by Ashley Du Preez palmed for a corner-kick by AmaZulu goalkeeper Veli Mothwa. However, the visitors rode their luck from a right-sided cross by Lehlohonolo Majoro on 17 minutes kneed against the top of the woodwork by defender Robyn Johannes.
It allowed Stellies to go on and take the lead three minutes before the half-hour mark through a one-touch finish from the near post by Marc Van Heerden following a teasing ball by Stanley Dimgba.
Usuthu clawed level from a scramble in the centre of the area five minutes before halftime picking Bonginkosi Ntuli to fire in off the left-hand post and into the net.
That was Ntuli’s last involvement, as he made way for Augustine Mulenga ahead of the second half with Siphelele Mthembu introduced for Luvuyo Memela in a double substitution for Usuthu.
This in hindsight resulted in the turnaround a minute from the break after Majoro pounced on a loose ball on the near side of the area to bundle past Lee Langeveldt.
Stellies had a chance to go level minutes later through a smart attempt from a tight angle by Dimgba, but Mothwa smothered as the forward went close again soon thereafter.
Benni McCarthy’s side continued to stay on the back-foot closer to fullt-ime with Stellies eagerly pushing for the equaliser, but 2-1 was how the encounter finished in Durban.
