Notoane grateful to Baxter for Mokoena

Mokoena has been part of Baxter’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and bagged his first goal for the senior team in a 6-0 win over Seychelles last year at FNB Stadium.

With so many central midfielders in the Bafana team to face Libya next weekend, Baxter did not have any problems allowing Mokoena to form part of the under-23 team, which will play against Angola during the FIFA international week.

The under-23s are playing Angola in a qualifier for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations which will be played in Egypt later this year. Should they qualifier for the next round of qualifiers, they will play either Mozambique or Zimbabwe.

“That addresses the issues of colaboration between the under-23 and Bafana Bafana. Of course there’s been talks behind the scenes with the senior technical team and coach Baxter has given me the green light after appealing to him in terms of our needs for players like Teboho Mokoena,” Notoane said after announcing his provisional squad on Monday.

“I made a special request, specifically with Mokoena because of the experience he has gained with Bafana Bafana and I am happy that the coach has supported my desire to want to have Teboho Mokoena’s experience, considering we don’t have much time for preparation.”

The U-23 AFCON serves as a qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The top three sides in the competition will represent Africa in Tokyo.
