Malesela tweaks Chippa philosophy

Chippa played eye-pleasing football last term but flirted with relegation as they struggled to make the most of their possession in the final third, eventually finishing above the drop zone on goal difference

However, Malesela says he has since tweaked their approach, and feels it was evident in the recent 1-0 loss to Orlando Pirates and the 2-0 win over AmaZulu at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday.

"We are trying to establish that difference from the past to say, how often can we go forward, how many chances can we create, and how many goals can we score," said Malesela.

"I'm avoiding a situation where we keep possession but it's going nowhere. We keep possession because we want to open up people and when we have those chances, we'll do so.

"I think it was evident in the last game against Pirates that we are a more forward-oriented team then just keeping the ball.

"But by all means, if we can't find a way we'll not force things. But we'll try and go through people as if they don't exist and we'll still build up and play.

"We are also trying as much as possible to be an offensive team."

The former Mamelodi Sundowns captain was naturally pleased his side got their first three points of the campaign against Usuthu thanks to goals from Moeketsi Sekola and Abel Mabaso in Port Elizabeth.

"We started very slow but at the end I think the changes we made really counted. A very good goal in the first half, good build-up, good runs off the ball," said Malesela.

"It was a positive thing, the calmness also of the goal scorer Sekola. Also a good set play when we scored the second goal so it was good.

"We always thrive to win at home and if there's one thing I hate it is losing at home, so we'll continue doing that.

"Having said that, I introduced a number of players and we made four changes in total from the last game [against Pirates].

"I think what stands out was the display of Phetso Maphanga, our left-back... he was quite an effective player and very difficult to beat, so I'm happy with what he contributed."

The Chilli Boys next host Baroka FC on September 12.
