Chippa United have explained the surprise return of Andile Mbenyane after it had been thought he may have left the club due to ill-discipline months ago.
Mbenyane was initially put on the transfer-list during coach Rhulani Mokwena's tenure in Port Elizabeth, with 'Picasso' even stating in May that he had been released due to disciplinary issues.
However, the 32-year-old made a surprise return in Chilli Boys colours against Cape Town City and Highlands Park recently, starting on the bench in both games.
Apparently Mbenyane was never fired and is now challenging for a place in the starting line-up under new coach Lehlohonolo Seema.
"Andile was never fired, his contract was never terminated," chief operating officer Lukhanyo Mzizi tells KickOff.com.
"He is a founding member and his contribution to Chippa United is highly valued at the club. We are happy to see him back at the club and fighting for his place in the team."
Chippa visit Baroka FC at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday in a do-or-die battle as both clubs are fighting for relegation and are separated by two points at the bottom of the log.
