From the streets to leading PSL scorer

Premiership

Sekhukhune United striker Chibuike 'Victor' Ohizu has gone from humble beginnings to being in the race for the DStv Premiership top scorer award.

Ohizu has already registered three goals in two games and finds himself leading the league scorers list.

The 24-year-old's career in South Africa was launched by fellow Nigerian Abayomi Adebayo who recruited him from the streets of Kempton Park to the Future of Africa Academy.

Ohizu then quickly went on a journey to Leruma FC, Jomo Cosmos and now the South African top-flight with Sekhukhune.

"I have an academy that caters for the less privileged kids coming from the streets in Kempton Park, so I help them that way and that is how I met Victor, Adebayo tells KickOff.com.

"I was walking on the streets when he called out my name and said 'coach, I play soccer and so I said come to training so that we can see. This was in 2015. The boy came from an academy in Nigeria and when he got here, he had nowhere to train until I met him.

"At my academy we always play games against professional clubs because I have contacts that I put to good use. So, we have played many teams and at first, it was Leruma FC that took him after which he went to Jomo Cosmos for two seasons before moving on to Sekhukhune United last year," he notes.

With Ohizu having set the pace Abeyomi still feels he can keep the momentum and get into double figures for the season and all he needs to do is just remain as humble as before.

"The boy is hot and will score a lot of goals because he has the potential to play anywhere. He is a very dedicated boy that will train on his own when there is no training, so I’m not surprised with the way he is performing now.

"If he can avoid injuries this season, he will do more and score a lot of goals. He must just not get carried away but remain humble because this is only the beginning. He hasn’t arrived as yet. That is what I always make him understand."
