The 27-year-old, who has featured in 27 games for the Citizens this season, picked up a knock in last month’s 4-1 victory over Chippa United, and has not featured since.
City coach Eric Tinkler has now confirmed that despite initial signs indicating he would be able to play again this campaign, this is now no longer possible.
“Matsi is out for the rest of the season,” Tinkler told reporters. “We had hoped to get him back for the Polokwane game at least. Yesterday we sent him to the doctor to get checked again, as he’s made fantastic progress, but he had some fluid in the ligament, so we are going to drain that.
“That means another three-week lay-off, so we would rather just avoid anything as it could get worse. So he’ll only be back for pre-season.”
A win against Wednesday’s opponents Golden Arrows will secure the Cape club a top-three finish this season despite losing two of their last three games, with Tinkler determined to finish the season on a high.
“There’s been a bit of disappointment, from all of us, from our last two results, because had we got results then, we could possibly be talking a different story right now,” he said.
”But it’s very important for us to try finish on a positive note, particularly at home, and meet our objective, which is to finish third in the league. We know we need three points from the last two games, but we want to finish on a strong and positive note here, so it’s important for us to collect those three points now.”
Kick-off against Arrows at Athlone Stadium is set for 19h30.
