'We have a bone to pick with Chiefs'

Chiefs and City are set to come to blows in their final pre-season fixture ahead of 2018/19, which is expected to kick off on August 3.

The one-day football event is hosted by Mpumalanga’s MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation Thandi Shongwe as the province builds up to the annual Mpumalanga Cultural Experience hosted on the first weekend of December.

Local side Mbombela United and Spears Of The Nation FC (formerly Acornbush United) will face off at 12h00 in the curtain raiser to the big game, which starts at 15h00 on Saturday.

McCarthy, who is set to enter into his second season as a head coach with the Mother City-based club, sees this weekend’s fixture as an opportunity to gauge their readiness and effectiveness of their preparations while also fine-tuning his charges ahead of the campaign.

“We are privileged to be part of this special occasion. It’s not every time a so-called ‘small fish’ gets to swim with the ‘big fish’ in the ‘big sea’, so it shows that we’re doing something right down there in Cape Town,” joked McCarthy.

“When the players go out they perform really well in order to receive the accolades and recognition. So now that we are getting invited to play against the mighty Kaizer Chiefs, and rubbing shoulders with them [in pre-season] it shows we have come a long way.

“We want to make the most of this because you don’t get to play this kind of opposition when you’re preparing for the season. So the bigger they come the better because it also gives us an idea of how far we are in terms of preparation, fitness levels and quality.”

The former Bafana Bafana striker is also keen to avenge his side’s league-double defeat suffered at the hands of Steve Komphela’s Amakhosi last season.

“We’re excited to play Chiefs because last season we couldn’t get that monkey off our back when they beat us home and away. So, we feel like we’ve got a bone to pick,” he concluded.
