Petersen comments on Chiefs future

Former Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has opened up about his reported pending move to Kaizer Chiefs.

The talented goalkeeper, who previously kept goals for Wits and Ajax Cape Town, was one of the few players who followed coach Gavin Hunt when he signed for Chiefs at the beginning of the season.

Unfortunately, the club's transfer ban handed down by FIFA meant those signings could not be made.

According to reports, the 26-year-old had already reached an agreement to return with Chiefs to the club once the ban is lifted at the end of this month.

"No obviously we still busy planning now, my agent will see what's the next move is," Petersen tells KickOff.com.

"But for now, I have a 10-month-old baby (chuckles). I'm enjoying my time with him and my daughter and my wife. And still trying to keep fit. At the moment I'm in Cape Town but I'm going back to Joburg soon. I bought a house in Joburg when I was at Wits, I'm staying in Joburg.

When asked if he was joining Chiefs, he replied, "The thing is I've been in talks with Chiefs, as you know that coach Gavin was there. And obviously coach Gavin is not there anymore, but obviously it's something that's still on the cards, but there's nothing for sure yet.

"Like I say I still have to plan out the future, and see what's gonna work out for me. Last season when they found out that I don't have a club obviously there was a few teams you know. At the beginning it was [Orlando] Pirates, and then obviously Chiefs came, and then AmaZulu came. But because it's a new season obviously there will be a few teams because I'm a free agent.

"Look, when the opportunity is there (to join Chiefs) is there, why not? Chiefs is one of the biggest teams in Africa. So obviously it will be a big opportunity for me. If you look at the calibre of keepers they have at Chiefs you know, it's not gonna be a walk in and play. I don't like freebies, I like to work for my place so, I don't expect anyone to hand me the number one jersey. I'm always up for a challenge."

Petersen also explained why he could not join another team after his Chiefs move did not materialise at the start of the season.

"The thing is I was recovering from injury that I sustained just before Lockdown," headed.

Other players expected to join Chiefs next season are Phathusedzo Nange, Sibusiso Mabiliso, Kgaogelo Sekgota, Ruzaigh Gamaldien and Sifiso Hlanti.
