Big stars backed to save Leopards

Black Leopards coach Lionel Soccoia has backed new recruits Thuso Phala and Mogakolodi Ngele to shine at the Limpopo side this season.

Despite spending big to bring in top talents like Botswana international Ngele, former Bafana Bafana winger Phala, Zimbabwean striker Cuthbert Malajila and Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Jonas Asvado Mendes, Leopards lost their first two matches and as a result are currently sitting at the bottom of the Absa Premiership table.

Madagascan midfielder Andriamirado 'Dax' Andrianarimanana has also finally completed his move, yet having made the biggest splash in the transfer window, they are the only team with zero points heading into the third weekend of the league.

"No [I'm not worried about the results], this is the start of the championship and we are working for better results," Soccoia tells

"The objective is to play good football and win a maximum match. The [new] players did not play much last year so it is necessary to be patient. These are serious professional players and they will very quickly be very important for the team. I have every trust with these players."

The Frenchman has been impressed with the quality and standard of the Premier Soccer League.

"It's a very good championship with good teams, very beautiful stadiums, a real professional championship."

Lidoda Duvha host Highlands Park at Thohoyandou Stadium today and Soccioa says he knows very well what he will be up against.

"A very good team with a very big collective who just won [against] Orlando [Pirates]."

Soccoia was asked if he thought the team was missing Mwape Musonda's goals up front.

"Musonda works with the group, he is serious and very professional. I don't know, ask the chairman."
