Benni explains second season struggles

Premiership

AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has sought to explain their struggles after an incredible 2020/21 season where they finished as league runners-up.

Usuthu have yet to taste victory in the DStv Premiership this season and suffered defeats in the MTN8 and CAF Champions League - but managed to progress at the expense of Nyasa Big Bullets after a historic away victory.

Following the 2-2 draw against Golden Arrows in the KZN derby this week, McCarthy lamented the absence of some of his key players that stood out for his side as he won the PSL Coach of the Season for his exploits.

"I think we've been very unfortunate with getting crucial injuries at crucial times, you know. We lost Kgotso Moleko and we already have Thembela Sikhakhane out with injury," McCarthy explained.

"We already have Augustine Mulenga who has been out for the entire season so far, he's not featured once. Qalinge got a little bit of a temperature and wasn't feeling too good so he's out with illness, Limbikani Mzava is out with illness.

"So yes we're missing a few important players for the team, who can make a huge difference to the side."

McCarthy's troops will be looking to secure their first win of the league campaign when they face up against Baroka on Saturday afternoon (15h00).
