Benni perplexed by a Bafana snub

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has raised questions as to how one of his key players has not been afforded a Bafana Bafana look-in.

Bafana’s all-time record scorer has once again shown his mettle as a coach after guiding his City outfit to a fourth-place finish with 48 points in his second season as a head tactician.

This is a vast improvement on last year’s fifth place finish with 40 points, having won more games– 13 compared to last season’s 11 – and suffered less defeats – eight compared to last season’s 12.

However, McCarthy, who has since been nominated for the Absa Premiership Coach of the Season accolade alongside Pitso Mosimane and Milutin Sredojevic, has never shied away from sharing the shine with his players.

In fact, he has gone as far as expressing his bewilderment as to how one of his defenders have not made the national team squad, despite having all the qualities enecessary.

“Taariq Fielies – how this boy doesn’t get a Bafana call-up is beyond me,” contested McCarthy of the 26-year-old centre-back, who last featured at last year’s COSAFA Cup.

“He’s got the football brains; he’s calm and collected on the ball; he’s scandalous in the air; he’s aggressive, and he’s a goal threat.

“But anyway, I’m just glad I’ve got these kinds of players in my team.”

Stuart Baxter is expected to name two seperate Bafana squads in the coming weeks as one does battle in the COSAFA Cup in Durban before a full-strength side assembles in Dubai ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations next month.
