Furman counting on Khune experience

Furman has been a star performer for Bafana since making his debut nearly three years ago.

The SuperSport United newcomer was part of the national squad that  qualified for the 2015 AFCON finals in Equatorial Guinea, along with the likes of Itumeleng Khune, Tokelo Rantie and Mandla Masango.

And Furman believes that experience can help Bafana turn around their current qualifying campaign.

“Yeah, [experience is] very much [important]. The more experience we can have in the camp, the better it is,” said Furman on Thursday morning ahead of the team’s departure for Libreville, where the plane will refuel before heading for Mauritania.

“It’s great to see Itu back and fully fit in the squad, and he’ll be a big player for us – both on and off the pitch. That kind of experience from playing on the continent is vital for us and can only bode well for us in trying to be successful in this qualifying campaign.”

The former Doncaster Rovers hard-man also concedes that the upcoming fixture with a relatively unknown North-West African side is a must-win encounter.

“We know how competitive these groups are, as our last AFCON experience showed us, and it’s important to get these three points, so that’s what we will be playing for,” the 27-year-old added.

With the team gearing up for their first ever meeting with Mauritania, Furman says they will try and swiftly familiarise themselves with conditions in Nouakchott.

“We’ve worked hard in training over the last few days. It’s going to be a tough game and we always know that going away on the continent is very tough, the conditions are going to be against us and not what we’re accustomed to.

“But we’ve got a day there to get used to the surroundings and the pitch, and by the time kick-off comes we’ll be ready.”
