The Bafana Bafana centre-back, who featured in two of South Africa’s group stage matches at the continental showpiece, was forced off the field in the opener against Algeria due to injury, but recovered in time for the nation’s last match against Ghana, in which they were bundled out of the tournament.
After a delay in the team’s return from Equatorial Guinea, the young defender is yet to re-join his club teammates at Ikamva, having been given extra time off.
“He only played two games and he’s only 18, so he should be pretty fresh,” Ajax coach Roger De Sa told a news conference.
“He reports back on Monday for training and then we’ll assess him from there.”
The Urban Warriors take on Polokwane City in their first League encounter of 2015 next Wednesday, yet a decision on Coetzee’s involvement in that match will only be taken next week after his return.
“He’s had a break, he’s had a good rest but he’s travelled a lot,” said De Sa.
“They [Bafana Bafana] went via [Ethiopia] - that’s not in our control and we’ll see him back on Monday and assess how good he is and how fit he is, and then make that call.”
