'Boa Morte brought Bucs nothing special'

Former Orlando Pirates coach Augusto Palacios says former Arsenal striker Luis Boa Morte added nothing special when he came to the PSL.

Boa Morte signed an 18-month contract with Pirates in January 2012 but only made three appearances in the South African top-flight before his contract was terminated.

The former Fullham star left Bucs under mysterious circumstances after falling out with Palacios during a cellphone incident on the team bus on the way to Orlando Stadium to play a league game.

'Njenje' believes his squad at Pirates that time was good enough to do well without Boa Morte after the team went on to win the Absa Premiership the same year.

"When he arrived he was no longer the same player like before," Palacios tells KickOff.com.

"He was a good player, he played international. He played in England. But when he arrived he was not in the same condition as Benni McCarthy, he was very far.

"He was not better than [Isaac] Chansa. Yes he had a good career and yes he was a good player in his time, but when he arrived in South Africa he was not in condition with the same players that played 12 games and went on to win the championship.

"It was good to have him, good experience but the players I had, I couldn't replace. I had [Tokelo] Rantie, Drogba [Bongani Ndulula], Benni McCarthy, you are talking also about [Rudolf] Bester.

"You can't replace and I need to be fair no matter if you are international or local. There was also [Ndumiso] Mabena. There were six or seven players and the midfield was worse. There was Oupa Manyisa, [Andile] Jali, Chansa, Bibo [Thandani Ntshumayelo].

"I need to put a player who was in great condition, that's why with 12 games we went on to win the championship. There was nothing special against him or don't like him. He was same like all the players.

"He didn't respect the rules and we could not agree. As an international player, the [local] players must learn from you like Benni did."
